My Neighborhood Believed in My Restaurant Before I Did

Here in Crown Heights, you can find curry chicken—the food of St. Vincent and the ­Grenadines, where my parents grew up—on nearly every corner, but people get a lighter version of Caribbean food when they come here. Many of our diners travel a good way for it, and they have a lot of pride when they discover that this is a black-owned ­restaurant. Our braised lamb is part of that, but there’s a quality to the place that appeals to people on a human level.
